Occupational Summary:

The Graphic Designer / Web Manager is responsible for the conception, design, and execution of all marketing and branding materials and digital assets for the Duke Arts brand and initiatives, including Duke Arts Presents (formerly Duke Performances), Duke Arts Create and more. The Designer and Web Manager will hold a variety of creative responsibilities, including creating a wide range of high-quality web pages, customized digital communications templates for email and more, and design for all advertising for digital and print publication.

This position is responsible for shaping and managing the visual identity of Duke Arts across all platforms. The Graphic Designer / Web Manager maintains consistent visual design standards based on the recent Duke Arts rebrand for the website (arts.duke.edu), emails (Mailchimp), social media platforms, advertising, print collateral and any graphic components of video projects.

This position reports to the Director of Marketing and Communications and is a key member of the Duke Arts marketing team, which includes a marketing manager, marketing specialist, student interns, and freelance web developers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the Duke Arts visual brand in all communications (35%)
    • Articulate & document the Duke Arts brand in materials for colleagues & collaborators.
    • Design printed and digital materials for Duke Arts programs including, but not limited to, season brochures, advertisements (print & digital), postcards, banners, show programs, posters & miscellaneous other promotion.
    • Provide design direction to marketing specialist and freelance graphic designers / design agencies when volume of work exceeds a viable threshold. (determined in conjunction with Director of Marketing & Communications)
  • Manage Duke Arts website and digital communications (35%)
    • Design all web projects and any accompanying digital collateral.
    • Provide art direction for e-newsletters from Duke Arts, Duke Arts Presents, and Duke Arts Create.
    • Provide art direction for the Duke Arts website, overseeing web development team decisions about visual identity, with an emphasis on user experience.
    • Assist with updating and refreshing the Duke Arts website regularly.
    • Manage Duke Arts e-mail marketing templates, ensuring accurate delivery of visual materials across platforms and email systems.
  • Provide art direction for photo and video-based promotions and communications, developed in collaboration with the marketing team. (10%)
  • Coordinate photo & video documentation of selected Duke Arts events. (5%)
  • Work with Duke Procurement Services to secure best rates & highest quality on Duke Arts print materials. (5%)
  • Oversee the distribution of print marketing materials both locally & via USPS. (5%)
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. (5%)

Education/Training

Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires five years of experience in graphic design with focus on branding and communications. Print and production, and digital design experience required.

Preferred Experience/Education/Skills

Graphic design or studio art experience or background is preferred, with experience or interest in performing and/or visual arts. Preferred candidates will have a strong command of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign). Experience with WordPress or HTML is a plus, as is experience with MailChimp or similar email platforms. Candidate should have strong project management skills. Desired: Experience or interest in digital photography & video is desired, but not required.
