The South Dakota Department of Public Safety's Office of Weights, Measures, & Inspections promotes efficiency by utilizing program staff throughout the state to conduct a variety of inspections for the Departments of Health, Education, Social Services, the State Fire Marshal, Lottery, as well as Weights and Measures. The inspections performed by staff offer diverse opportunities to meet and work with a variety of entities daily. This position is responsible for identifying violations of regulations to ensure compliance with State and Federal Rules. Selected candidates will need to discuss and explain violations with business managers; complete required reports; ensuring businesses and consumers are receiving fair treatment and protect the public from health and safety hazards. You have the availability to work remotely from home while being responsible for establishing your schedule, ensuring the requirements from our partner agencies are met.

This position is NOT for building inspections, Motor Carrier, Highway Patrol or specifically Health Inspector.

Required: general daily travel with occasional overnights; reaching, grabbing, pulling, pushing, climbing, general and some heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.); conducting inspections during inclement weather conditions; exposure to hazardous substances, combustible materials, heights, and illnesses.

The ability to explain functions of partner agencies, including our own, but not limited to knowledge, skills and abilities listed below.

Knowledge of:
  • it would be helpful but not a requirement for the position to have knowledge/experience in one or more of the following areas: daycare facilities, educational food program reviews, lunch programs, video lottery, fire and life safety, safe food handling practices (ServSafe) and/or commercial weighing and measuring devices.
Skill to:
  • develop and maintain relationships with the public, other agencies as well as our own;
  • manage time; develop an efficient schedule;
  • meet needs of partner agencies;
  • address requests and problems as they arise, both effectively and professionally.
Ability to:
  • explain regulation requirements applicable to inspections conducted by office;
  • make reasonable, logical decisions;
  • work independently;
  • determine priorities; handle special requests;
  • coordinate schedules for area;
  • determine workload priorities;
  • work with a variety of personalities;
  • handle challenging situations.
