The Department of State Hospitals – Coalinga is now accepting applications for multiple Physician and Surgeon (Safety) – Retired Annuitant positions. Under medical supervision, provides adequate, appropriate, and timely preventative, routine, specialized, and emergency medical care to all individuals residing at the Department of State Hospitals - Coalinga in need of such services, consistent with generally accepted professional standards of care. The incumbent is responsible for making professional decisions regarding general medical work and surgery, as well as for appropriate referrals for services not performed at DSH-C. Incumbent is required to maintain professional communication with physicians, consultants, nurses, and other personnel.

The employee is required to work any shift and schedule in a variety of settings throughout the hospital and may be required to work overtime and float to other work locations as determined by the operational needs of the hospital. All employees are required to have an annual health review and TB test or whenever necessary to ascertain that they are free from symptoms indicating the presence of infection and are able to safely perform their essential job functions.
12-Hour shifts and other alternate schedules may be available based on current staffing needs. Maximum of 960 hours per Fiscal Year (July 1 - June 30)

Coalinga State Hospital is accepting applications for this recruitment continuously. This advertisement will remain posted until the position(s) have been filled. Cut-off-date for this recruitment will be every other Friday commencing January 9, 2026. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and have eligibility by the application received date to be invited to participate in the next available scheduled interview and/or processed for conditional hire.
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Willingness to work at developmental centers, State hospitals, or correctional facilities contracting with the Department of Mental Health for diagnostic and treatment services; demonstrated leadership ability; sympathetic and objective understanding of the problems of developmentally or mentally disordered offenders; tact; patience; and emotional stability.
All state civil service employees are currently subjected to a mandatory Personal Leave Program (PLP), which entails a reduction in monthly gross salary but provides PLP leave credits in lieu of Pay through June 20, 2027. The amount of salary reduction is dependent upon the classification and associated union Bargaining Unit (BU). The BU for this position is NAME UNION, subject to PERCENTAGE in salary reduction, accruing approximately 3-5 hours of PLP each month.Benefit information can be found on the CalHR website and the CalPERS website.
