Job Description
The Bay Area Environmental Research Institute is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, medical condition, gender identity, protected veteran status, or any other legally protected status. If you have a disability that requires accommodation, please let us know by sending a request to the Human Resources Office at hr@baeri.org
Please read the position description thoroughly.
The ICEE (In situ Carbon Evolution Experiments) Facility, located at the NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA, has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher. This candidate will be employed through Bay Area Environmental Research Institute
What you will be working on:
Exciting laboratory and theoretical research is under way investigating the radiation (UV, X-ray, and electron) induced changes in the composition, physical and chemical properties of interstellar and planetary analog ices and materials. The investigations are aimed at
understanding interstellar materials, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), aerosols, ice mantles on dust grains and ices in comets and on solar system bodies. Analogs materials are produced in the laboratory under conditions realistically close to those expected in the interstellar, interplanetary, or planetary conditions (i.e., low [cryogenic] temperatures, high vacuum). The materials are probed in situ using Raman, FTIR, and Mass spectroscopy. We also have the capabilities to do ex situ analysis using a Raman microscope. Our goals are to understand the production and diagenesis of potential organic biomarkers and to provide spectral information for interpreting observations from ground-, air-, and space-based observatories and missions; guide instrument development for future missions; and to help improve existing astrophysical and planetary models. For more information on the ICEE Facility, visit our Web site at -situ-carbon-evolution-experiments-icee/
Qualifications:
- The qualified candidate is expected to have experience conducting experiments using an Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) chamber, cryo-coolers, radiation source(s) (e.g., UV, X-ray, and electron) as well as the analytical techniques of FTIR and Raman spectroscopy as
well as Mass spectrometry.
- The candidate is also expected to be proficient at reducing and interpreting spectral data from these instruments.
- Candidates with experience designing and building UHV experimental systems are encouraged to apply, as are candidates with experience in solid works and Python programming.
- Strong written and oral communication skills for scientific publication.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Job Requirements:
- The selected applicant will be expected to attend project meetings on a biweekly or monthly basis, as well as weekly tag-up meetings.
- The candidate is expected to conduct laboratory experiments involving the use of High vacuum chambers, cryogenic coolers and radiation sources, while monitoring changes via FTIR, Raman and Mass spectroscopies
- The candidate will be expected to publish the results of this work in peer-reviewed journals as well as present the results at scientific conferences.
- In addition, the selected candidate will be required to assist in the day to day operations of the laboratory, including general housekeeping, supply inventory, and hazardous waste management.
As a laboratory research position, onsite work is required most of the time, although telecommuting is possible when performing non-laboratory activities. The postdoctoral fellowship is full-time for 2 years and is through the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute
(BAERI).
