Duties

Essential Duties and Tasks

• Reporting and recording all duties performed at crime scenes.
• Collecting and preserving of evidence from crime scenes, photographing and sketching scenes.
• Maintaining equipment used by Crime Scene Investigators.
• Collecting evidence and reports at autopsies.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of geographical layout of Guilford County
• Knowledge in the use of crime scene processing materials and proper collection and handling of evidence.
• Knowledge of the laws of North Carolina pertaining to search and seizure, as well as departmental policies and procedures.
• Ability to work rotating shifts and to be on call after hours.
• Ability to adapt to different situations at crime scenes.
• Ability to maintain records and documentation.
• Ability to deal with the public of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduation from high school.
• Some experience in working with the public of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Crime Scene Investigators work 12 hour shifts as part of a modified DuPont Schedule which includes weekends and holidays.
• Relocation to Guilford or contiguous county and possession of a North Carolina Driver's License required within 90 days of employment with the Guilford County Sheriff's Department.
• A motor vehicle record (MVR), background check, and drug screening will be conducted on candidates considered for positions.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Associate Degree or higher in Forensics, Biology, Chemistry, Anthropology, or related field of study and two years' experience processing and collecting evidence.
• Proficiency with DSLR camera and knowledge of underlying theories and concepts related to photography.

Special Requirements:

• Must successfully complete the Crime Scene Investigator Field Training Program.
• Be able to complete training classes concerning all aspects of Crime Scene Investigations.
• Must obtain International Association for Identification (IAI) Crime Scene Investigator Certification within two years of employment.
• Crime Scene Investigators are expected to remain current on the latest technologies and science related to crime scene and evidence processing and to remain proficient with all crime scene and evidence processing equipment.
