Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Community Resources Manager, the Catholic Chaplain provides spiritual and moral guidance to institutional residents and direct supervision to the chapel clerks and porters.

Prepares and conducts religious services and administers religious rites. Organizes and instructs classes in religious ethics and sacred music events, and the duties needed to complete this i.e. create ducats and reports etc.

Interviews and counsels inmates on spiritual matters, ethical, moral, and family problems; including, providing death notifications and providing counseling specially related to that issue. Interviews inmates for CDCR 3030 and 602 forms as well as collect and respond to mail and CDCR 22’s in timely manner. Oversees the facilitation of various religions when needed.

Provides supervision, on-the-job training, and work performance evaluation of chapel clerks and chapel porters. Prepares inmate timecards and month end reports etc.

Prepares and arranges programs conducted in the institution by visiting religious and allied groups. Recruits and trains community volunteers to assist with religious programs. Prepares annual evaluations on religious volunteers. Requests volunteer identification cards and monitors access to the institution. Prepares communication with various groups or individuals in matters of religious importance. Assist in institution canteen audits. Oversee faith based special events.

Attends a combination of 40 hours In-Service Training/On-the-Job Training annually. Serves as a consultant to classification committees when designated. Completes other general duties as needed. Perform administrative duties including, but not limited to: adhere to Department policies, rules and procedures; submit administrative requests including leave, travel, and training in a timely and appropriate manner; accurately report time, and submit timesheets by the due date.

3. Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by departmental annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.

Ability to organize, prepare, and conduct Roman Catholic religious services and courses on ethics, religion, and sacred music; counsel institution residents and their families on moral and ethical problems; establish rapport with institution residents; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; use spiritual assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation in the clinical setting; understand and help others discover meaning in the experiences of suffering grief and loss; understand the ways in which psycho-social dynamics and cultural/ethnic differences affect pastoral care practices; provide intensive and pastoral care to persons in various life situations and crisis circumstances; integrate pastoral theology with pastoral practices; assist and support others in the application of their own values in decision making.
