Job Description

Summary

The Clinical Assistant Professor provides clinical expertise in patient care management of spine and cranial disorders and an appropriate teaching environment for spine surgery fellows, residents, and students. The Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery or a designated faculty member will supervise the Clinical Assistant Professor.

The Clinical Assistant Professor will adhere to all clinical practices currently in place for the care of patients at MD Anderson Cancer Center. This includes completing all medical record documentation for patients for whom the Clinical Assistant Professor is responsible in a timely fashion. They will be expected to comply with all regulations regarding patient confidentiality.

Key Functions

Practices clinical surgery including stereotactic radiosurgery in an exemplary manner according to standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and the American College of Surgeons, properly balanced with other academic activities.

Develops and maintains a clinical neurosurgical practice for patients referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Completes patient documentation for medical records within periods provided by institutional policy. Requires dictating in clear and concise manner, and visual review of documents.

Keeps abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty. Requires listening to and assimilating information from the conferences.

Represents the Department of Neurosurgery in local, national, and international matters pertaining to the field of spine surgery. Will require traveling to sites outside of the Houston area, and, upon return disseminating the information obtained or learned by verbally or in writing sharing with department colleagues.

Assist faculty with operations when there are no appropriate level fellows available.

Visually reviews for proper ICD-9/ICD-10 and CPT coding and approves all surgical procedure charge documents within five working days.

Completes patient documentation for medical records within time frames provided by institutional policy. Requires dictating in clear and concise manner, and visual review of documents.

Corresponds as appropriate in writing or in telephone conversations with referring physicians regarding patient care treatment.

Must have ability to receive and give clear and concise verbal and written communications.

Must have ability and willingness to observe and comply with all institutional rules that follow OSHA regulations.

This position has a target base salary of $664,823 to $846,381 and is eligible for incentive compensation, comprehensive health, wellness, time off, savings, and retirement benefits, as well as relocation support, as applicable.

Education

Required: Doctoral degree (M.D., or equivalent) from an accredited school and be professionally competent

License/Certification

Required:

  • Licensed to practice in Texas
  • Board certified (or obtained within department timeline), unless exempted
  • Residency requirements as defined by the Texas Medical Board
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Basic Life Support, or Advanced Cardiac Life Support

Experience

Required: At least 5 years' experience post degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical specialist or GME trainee (except specialties with shorter residencies or fellowships)
