Department Summary


The Social Science interdepartmental program (SSIDP) supports research and teaching collaborations across departments in the UCLA Division of Social Sciences and beyond, with a focus on methodological innovation and creative problem-solving. Our programs encourage innovative social science research by bringing diverse faculty and students together to generate new understanding of key social issues. At the same time, we aim to transform research training in the social sciences for the twenty-first century with initiatives that rethink traditional approaches to teaching and learning.The SSIDP offers the Master of Social Science (MSS) self-supporting degree. Drawing from current theories, methods, and professional practices from across the social sciences, students develop proficiency with quantitative and qualitative research methods used to address complex social problems. The intensive one-year curriculum emphasizes creative problem-solving and collaborative research practices. Graduates will be prepared for academic and professional careers.

Position Summary



UCLA’s Social Science Interdepartmental Program is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Assistant Director for the Social Science IDP and the Master of Social Science . This role is responsible for overseeing program administration, student affairs, budget management, and faculty support, ensuring the effective operation of the program. The position requires strong organizational and analytical skills, experience in higher education administration, and the ability to manage complex academic and financial processes. This is an opportunity to contribute to a program dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary social science research and education.

  • Skill in planning of budgets with multiple funding sources. Organizational skills for planning and executing events. (Required)
  • Ability to learn quickly and use efficiently university software and platforms, such as, for purchasing, budgeting, HR, applications and admissions. (Required)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to obtain and convey information clearly and to interact with individuals at various levels professionally and diplomatically. (Required)
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with senior level administrators, academicians, colleagues, staff. (Required)
  • Skilled at operating personal computers utilizing word processing, spreadsheet and database software, including Word, and Excel. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of university administrative policies, procedures, and resource. Working knowledge of University health and welfare benefits, Retirement plans, and other University benefit plans. (Preferred)
  • High level knowledge to design and create database and budget system utilizing complex formulas and micros in Excel, Acrobat, Access. (Preferred)
  • Working knowledge of UC Recruit, Opus, Interfolio, Student Information system, GoGrad, UCPATH, Time Reporting System(TRS), and CDW payroll data systems. (Preferred)
  • Detailed knowledge of regulations that govern the hiring of non-U.S. citizens in temporary and permanent situations, including F1, J1, H1, OPT visa processes. (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of Unit 18 Lecturer (and other union-related) contract policies and procedures including renewals and merit advancements for continuing lecturers. Detailed knowledge of postdoc and TA appointments policies and procedures. (Preferred)

  • Bachelor's Degree In related area and / or equivalent experience / training (Required)
